3D printers have for a long time been way to expensive for the average consumer, but prices have dropped significantly the last few years. Today you can get a 3D printer for the same price as a pair of nice sneakers.
Cheaper 3D printers usually come in a building set which you need to assemble yourself – which can be a fun and learning experience, although it can be tricky and take time.
Another way where cheaper 3D printers differ are the quality of building materials / hardware. Usually when printing different filaments such as, PLA, ABS, TPU, etc you need a printer that can handle hot temperatures (more than 200 celsius) which of course put a lot of strain on cheaper components, causing them to produce worse print quality and these parts will usually have a shorter lifespan (but if you bought an assembly kit, you can probably do your own repairs).
